WHATEVER HAPPENED TO VARNADO SIMPSON ? - You say who the heck is Varnado Simpson??? Well, if you are a student of mine, you may recall the PBS Frontline program: "Remember My Lai" I have shown many times in class over the years. The film documents the My Lai massacre through interviews with soldiers where present in My Lai that day, and survivors of the massacre who cannot forget 20 years later. Varnado Simpson was the very shaky African American soldier who admitted to the killings & who had suffered great guilt feelings ever since.
Below are two interesting articles I found when I "Googled" Simpson's name on my computer. The first is an amazing story of forgiveness & the second is the answer to the question; Whatever happened to Varnado Simpson?"
My Lai brings lessons in forgiveness - This article by Mike Boehm, a Quaker from Madison Wisconsin tells a story about Varnado Simpson to a Vietnamese interpreter when he went to Vietnam to attend the ground-breaking ceremony for the My Lai Peace Park
in March of 1998.
